To demonstrate the viability of augmented reality for power generation operations and maintenance activities, EPRI commissioned a software development firm to create an augmented reality demonstration using a mockup of a virtual industrial pump and valve assembly. This report summarizes the project and discusses lessons learned and best practices developed.
Drawing on a review of successful power plant maintenance organizations, this report outlines good maintenance principles, covering topics such as equipment reliability, work management processes, outage management, lockout/tagout, communications, and human performance.
Encapsulation is a process that binds waste materials into a form that minimizes their release into the environment. This report describes results of a laboratory study of five mix designs for wastewater encapsulation, including physical properties, mineralogical data, and environmental performance.
Arc flash ratings for personal protective equipment are determined by standard industry tests that expose fabrics, garments, and other materials to a staged arc flash event. While most of these tests subject the materials to an arc that transfers heat primarily through radiation, many actual events involve a significant convection component. This research developed a sensor capable of measuring the thermal components of an arc flash in order to better characterize arcs and inform the use and testing of arc-rated materials.
This software is used to assess whether spilled oil could reach a waterbody and to prepare Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plans as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This new research project is examining energy efficiency opportunities for breweries and wineries.
Inspections of coal combustion product ponds and landfills typically involve labor-intensive walk-throughs to look for visual evidence of conditions that could compromise the facility’s performance. This new research project examines the use of drones for these inspections.
This white paper discusses the overlap between energy and aerospace applications of augmented and virtual reality.
This report discusses the current state of science, knowledge gaps, and research opportunities related to the environmental aspects of the natural gas value chain. Subjects covered include emissions and air quality, water quality and availability, seismic issues, wildlife and habitat impacts, and human health impacts.
In recent years, solar plant developers have increased the ratio of plants’ direct current (DC) power capacity to the alternating current (AC) capacity of the inverters. This report discusses the tradeoffs that can be considered in selecting the DC-AC ratio.
This report examines preparation exercises, tools, technologies, and other utility best practices for improving cyber security incident response at power plants.
This report provides the specifications and design details for a demonstration of technology to automate water chemistry sampling in nuclear plants.
